In Previous Unit, you have studied about energy audit, which is one of the most important tools for achieving energy efficiency and energy conservation. You have also learnt that energy efficiency has a large potential of meeting the growth in demand. This enormous potential should be harnessed if we wish to achieve the goal of energy conservation. In this unit, you will learn about demand side management of energy, which is an effective tool for improving energy efficiency and promoting energy conservation.
Power utilities, worldwide, have used demand side management techniques since the early 1980s to control demand growth, thus delaying the need to build new plants. The idea was that utilities could take the power saved and sell it to new customers, thereby slowing demand growth. It is now a well known fact that there is an estimated technical potential of saving 25,000 MW power by improving the energy efficiency in the power sector through Demand Side Management (DSM). In this unit, we introduce the concept of DSM and discuss its benefits for the utilities. We describe the DSM techniques used in power systems. You will also study how the Energy Conservation Act, 2001 seeks to implement energy efficiency policies. Finally, you will learn about the role of the government and ERCs in facilitating DSM.In the next unit, we discuss DSM on the consumer side and acquaint you with the challenges in its implementation in India.
